First monument of planetoid
Probably first ever monument of celestial body has been shown in “Dwór Artusa” in Toruń. The monument is called “12999 Toruń” and will be placed in the middle of the biggest square of this city.
“The monument was made by Paulina Kaczor-Paczkowska from University of Nicolay Copernicus in Toruń (the faculty of fine arts). We want to open a celebration of International Year of Astronomy, established by UNESCO and UN. We will celebrate four hundredth anniversary of first astronomical observation with telescope of Galileo” – informs Agnieszka Pietrzak who is a spokesman of Toruń’s mayor.
The monument will be placed near the famous fountain called “Cosmopolis” on the outskirts of the Old Town on the 19th of February 2009.
The planetoid called 12999 was discovered in 1981 by American astronomer Edward Bowel. Bowel did it in Anderson Mesa Station Observatory in Arizona.
