20 years of Gazeta Wyborcza
One of most read newspapers in Poland has celebrated 20 years of its existence. Celebrations started on Friday with cultural events that will last until next week.
Gazeta Wyborcza is one of most controversial daily newspapers in Poland. It was linked with “Solidarność” when it was opened, but quite quickly it became a mirror of Adam Michnik’s world view, who works as Gazeta’s editor-in-chief until now. Absolute power of Adam Michnik in editorial section as well as usage of Gazeta for his private vendettas resulted in many enemies that Wyborcza has.
However, no matter how one judges the newspaper’s content and its editor-in-chief, it must be said that it was the first government independent title in Poland that for many years was the most reliable news source. Wyborcza also was the first to openly talk about social problems that were hidden during Communism. It was the first daily that wrote about abortions, rights of homosexual people and feminism.
