Government found a way for Polish farmers to block cultivation of genetically modified plants. A project of Polish bill was accepted by European Authorities in Brussels.

During the election campaign in 2007 Civic Platform (PO) claimed that it will change law in such a way that Poland will be a GMO free zone. However an act that will prohibit GMO in Poland would be against European law.

For this reason government used a “back door”: a prohibition of GMO will be done as a “local initiative”, which will allow farmers to declare their fields a GMO free zones.

According to “Gazeta Wyborcza” this project of Polish bill was accepted by European Minister Committee. The bill shall be in power by the end of the year.
