20th anniversary of first independent elections in Poland after World War II
Polish society is celebrating 20th anniversary of first independent Parliament elections in Poland after World War II. It is believed that 1989 is one of the most important dates connected with collapsing of communism in Europe.
Everything started in 1989 in Gdańsk where Lech Wałęsa and other workers from famous shipyard decided to object to authorities. The then leaders of “Solidarity”, like: Lech Wałęsa, Tadeusz Mazowiecki, Bronisław Geremek and many other famous people gathered all together and started round-table talks. The effect of those talks was astonishing, because it believed that on the 4th June 1989 communism was finally removed from Poland and other countries in Europe. Lech Wałęsa became one of the most important people connected with collapsing of the regime in Europe. Wałęsa who is also Nobel Prize winner, was first independently chosen president of Poland.
According to historians 4th of June 1989 is one of the most important dates in XX century. Communist regime was definitively defeated and Soviet influence on such countries as: Poland, Czechoslovakia or Hungary was stopped. Shipyard in Gdansk became the symbol of changes that made our continent free and completely independent.
