Almunia supports Polish Euro plan
According to Wall Street Journal Joaquin Almunia, European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs voiced his full support for Polish plans to adopt Euro, but he also added that Poland can not count on any special treatment.
Initially Polish government planed to adopt Euro before Euro 2012, but latter changed it declaration saying that it will be done by the end of 2012. However most experts say that this declaration was just a wishful thinking as Polish deficit and inflation are over the limit set by European Union. The financial crisis that rolls over Europe also did not help to achieve those goals.
"I welcome the government's ambition to join the euro but deadlines, calendar and measures needed to fulfill entry criteria are in the hands of the Polish government," Almunia said. "Our responsibility is to assess and interpret the Maastricht criteria. We will not change that interpretation because we need to be consistent and give equal treatment to all countries" he added.
