Archaeologists dug up the oldest building in Białystok
Archaeologists from Białystok dug up the oldest building in Białystok. The building from XVI century was found near the Palace of Braniccy. According to the experts, it can be the oldest monument in Białystok.
The courtyard of the Palace of Braniccy is absolutely dug because of archaeologists who are looking for remains of an old city. They have already found ruins of very old building dated to the XVI century. “It is most sensational discovery in here. We think that this monument comes from the beginning of the existence of the city” – said Andrzej Lechowski who is a director of the Museum of Podlasie.
“I believe the building comes from XVI century so it may be the oldest one in the whole city. It could have been property of Braniccy or Wiesiołowscy (Polish famous gentry families). Maybe it owned to Tabutowicz family?” – thinks archaeologist Ireneusz Krysiński.
Besides stone walls, there were found remains of a stove, tiles and ceramics. The other parts of building can still be underground. Archaeologists have been continuing their works since four seasons. This year season has been started in May. Krysiński said that they were going to dig up one more excavation near Mickiewicza Street. After finishing those works, there will be built fabulous post baroque fountains. “We wanted to find those fountains, but instead of them we found unbelievable old buildings” – said Krysiński.
