Poland has the highest number of prisoners in Europe
Poland leads at the list of European countries with people locked up behind bars. Out of 600 thousand prisoners in EU, 90 thousands are held in Polish jails. Germany, where population is twice as big as in Poland, has just 73 thousand criminals - shows a report of Eurostat for years 2005-2007.
The basic data of European Union is following: In 27 Member States 607 thousand people have been locked behind bars that give an average of 123 people for 100 thousand citizens.
Poland is at the top of this ranking. We have the sad first place in number of imprisoned people. However in the number of prisoners per 100 thousand citizens we are ranked 4th, behind Estonia (302 prisoners per 100 thousand), Latvia (293) and Lithuania (232). The lowest rank was given to Slovenia that has only 60 prisoners per 100 thousand people.
