Dallas News: Gortat in Mavs
According to Dallas News Marcin Gortat will probably play for Dallas Mavericks next season.
The newspaper repots that Mark Cuban, the owner of the team offered a full mid-level exemption to Gortat, which means that he will get around 5.85 million dollars a year. He is also guaranteed a lot of minutes as centers were not a strong point of Dallas team.
For this reason this offer makes perfect sense. On the other hand Mavs do not have quality big man coaches that would help Gortat to become a better player. He will also train with Eric Dampier, not Dwight Howard, who help him a lot to develop to a player he is now.
From the development point of view Huston Rockets with injury prone Yao Ming would be much better choice, but after signing Trevor Ariza they are not able offer anything near the quote of Dallas Mavericks.
Gortat is a restricted free agent, which means that his current team Orlando Magic can match Dallas offer to keep Gortat in their rooster. However after acquiring of Vince Carter they are over salary cap, which means that they would have to pay a dollar to NBA for every dollar they are over the cap. In practice that means that Gortat will cost Orlando over 11 million, so it is highly unlikely that they would like to pay so much for a back up player.
