Polish president will award priest Popiełuszko
Lech Kaczyński will award priest Popiełuszko with the Order of the White Eagle which is the highest decoration given to Polish citizens for their merits. Popiełuszko’s family will collect this decoration on Monday which is the anniversary day of his death.
Priest Popiełuszko who was the chaplain of “Solidarity” was brutally killed by (SB) the secret police in communist Poland. “This decision has already been signed by the president” – said Paweł Wypych from the Chancellery of the President.
Priest Jerzy Popiełuszko who was connected with opposition and “Solidarity” was killed by SB in October 1984 what means 25 years ago. The officers of SB stopped his car near Górska village (toruńskie voivodship), kidnapped the priest and started torturing him. After 11 days his body was found in Vistula River near Włocławek. In 1985 three responsible officers were sentenced to many years’ imprisonment. The beatification process of Jerzy Popiełuszko has been started in 1997.
