When John Paul II was wounded by Ali Agca, he wanted to resign, because he felt guilty. The Pope did not allow him to go. A year later he rescued the Pope from a knifer in Fatima. Camilio Cibin, a legendary chief of Vatican gendarmerie is dead.

Cibin was responsible for John Paul’s II security for years. He was there on 13th May 1981, when the Pope was wounded. He could not forgive himself for not preventing this situation and wanted to resign. The Pope convinced him however that he should stay.

A year later Cibin prevented another tragedy, when he quickly disarmed a knifer that wanted to stab John Paul II. It was revealed by Stanisław Dziwisz recently that the Pope was lightly wounded during that incident.
