US investment in Poland
Weyerhaeuser Co., a major U.S. timber and lumber supplier, is going to establish a pulp processing plant in Poland to supply Procter & Gamble's operations in eastern and western Europe – the company representative said during a press conference on Friday in Washington.
The company has just won a competitive tender process to purchase 100,000 square meters of land in Gdańsk and is said to close the deal before the end of the year. According to plans a 17 thousand square meters plant shall be built. It is still not certain if production is going to be moved there or will the facility be used just as a warehouse for products from southern U.S. mills. The only certain thing is that Procter & Gamble will be the facility's primary customer.
The facility is supposed to become fully operational in 2012 and it is going to employ at least 45 people.
Decision of Weyerhaeuser Co. to use Poland as its base is not surprising. Poland is the only European county that stayed afloat during the financial crisis and for this reason is very attractive for foreign investors
