The seminar titled – “Green Roads and Reduction of Noise in Poland” was a good chance to talk to dr Henryk Koba from Technical University of Wrocław. The event took place in a seat of Bisek Company producing asphalt with admixture of rubber made of used tires.

Dr Henryk Koba said:

- Asphalt with admixture of rubber is more durable, resistant to fissures, frost and high temperatures. What is more it is very rough and has a good grip that shortens our breaking distance by 25 %. There is also one more interesting thing, because this modified asphalt is noiseless and makes even 6 decibels less noise that normal one.

- I have been testing rubber since 1995. It was very difficult at first, because we were using a dry method while we use new technology, based on water now. We produce bituminous mass.

What kind of tyres do you use?

- Tyres from lorries are not the best, we prefer used tyres from motor cars, because this rubber is soft, which makes them easier to mix them with asphalt. What is more 60 per cent of all used tiers come from motor cars. I also have to mention that this technology based on tyres solves the problem of their utilization.

What should be done to build not only roads, but also motorways using this technology? We know that even runways are built in the USA using this technology.

- I have to admit that a good atmpshepre is also needed; our officials need a lot of documents and permissions, so we have to start acting. The best example is a Dutch company, which won a tender for renovation our railway tracks. Polish technology is two times cheaper. Thanks to our cooperation with Adam Bisek we show that we can produce high quality product.

Dr Henryk Koba enumerated several merits of modified asphalt:

- “This road surface has a good grip, is resistant for fissures, noiseless and more ecologic, as  it solves the problem of utilisation of used tires” – said Henryk Koba.
