Interview with Professor Antoni Szydło during the seminar – “Green Roads and Reduction of Noise
The seminar titled “Green Roads and Reduction of Noise” took place on the 4th of December 2009. The main topic of the meeting was asphalt modified with rubber.
One of invited guest was Professor Antoni Szydło from Technical University of Wrocław. The professor is a graduate from Land Building Faculty, specialising in roads and airports building. Szydło is interested in discovering of new oad surfaces models, runways and testing their load-bearing capacity, testing new blends made of mineral and asphalt components and recycling of used road surfaces. The professor gave us very interesting interview connected with the meeting.
Why this method is revolutionary?
- The Americans have been using this technology for many years. We and American engineers started using this method in the middle of 90’s. We knew that it would be very innovative and help us to make our road surfaces better. However we had no neccesary equipment. Fortunately thanks to Mr. Bisk, who designed the machine, today it is possible to produce mineral-asphalt mass, which is much better than it used to be. What is more our new asphalt has fantastic parameters. For example it more resistant to stretching, fissures and cars’ ruts do not appear so fast. What is more, our tests seem to confirm my point of view – said Professor Szydło.
- Our asphalt, which is not modified, is not so elastic, which makes it susceptible to fissures. When we add some rubber, it is elastic and more resistant.
- Professor Szydło said – „Our New asphalt is modified with liquid or granulated polymers, while rubber is prepared in a special container. This modification makes our asphalt very resistant, which is not so obvious when it is modified with some other (heterogeneous) polymers. Added rubber withold evaporation of those polymers, so our asphalt is durable for a long time and does not crack so fast. All of this information has already been confirmed by our scientific researches. We are completely sure that this road surface is a very good solution.
Is it possible that this technology will be used on a large scale?
- “Wrocław is really interested in using this technology – says Professor Szydło – it can promote our region. There are some projects and plans and we are going to built several road sections in Wrocław. We cooperate with Mr. Bisk and we hope that it will be a fantastic idea” – said Professor Antoni Szydło.
